What Is Naan?
Naan also meaning bread is a soft, pillowy flatbread that is commonly found in Indian, Middle Eastern, and Central Asian cuisines. Traditionally baked in a tandoor (a clay oven), naan has a chewy texture with slightly crispy edges and a signature blistered surface.
It’s perfect for soaking up rich curries, scooping up stews, or wrapping around grilled meats and veggies. You’ll often find it served alongside dishes like chicken tikka masala, kebabs, or even used as the base for delicious flatbread-style pizzas. Whether it’s brushed with butter, garlic, or herbs—naan is a flavorful and versatile staple that brings any meal together.

Ingredients for Homemade Naan?
Here’s what you’ll need to make this delicious Naan bread.
Flour: you can either make it with selfrising flour or All purpose flour. If you use self-rising flour you won’t need to use basking powder.
Olive oil:use a high quality olive oil
Greek Yogurt: this helps the naan bread come together and high in protein
Baking powder
Salt:
seasoning: optional, but I love adding extra flavor to my naan bread. I added salt, and ultimate garlic seasoning to flavor this naan.
How to make this delicious Homemade Naan?
Start by combining flour, salt, baking powder and the ultimate garlic seasoning. Add in greek yogurt and olive oil and mix with a wooden spoon until a rough dough forms. Transfer the shaggy dough to a well floured surface and begin to knead until a smooth dough ball forms. Allow the dough to rest for about 10 minutes.
Next, cut the dough into 6 sections for larger naan or 8 sections for smaller naan. Roll the dough into individual balls then roll out the dough.
In a cast iron skillet over medium heat add in 1 tsp of oil then add the rolled dough. Toast for a few minutes until golden and charred. Flip and allow the naan to cook. It’ll begin to puff up but once you remove from the heat it will deflate.
Brush on some olive oil and parsley or melted butter if desired. Serve warm with your favorite meat or stew or eat plain. Enjoy!

Recipe Variations
Make it buttery: you can make this buttery goodness by adding butter to the dough and also cooking the naan bread in a mix of melted butter and olive oil.
Add in fresh herbs: you can easily change the flavor profile of this naan by adding your favorite herbs and spices.
Make it cheesy: cheese makes everything better. Add some Mozzerella into the center of the dough ball before rolling out to get melty cheesy goodness when cooked.

Pro Tip: You can also use self-rising flour for this recipe! If you do, simply skip the baking powder and reduce the added salt slightly, since self-rising flour already contains both.
