Homemade Sweet Potato Butter is the fall spread you didn’t know you needed! It’s sweet, thick, creamy and perfectly spiced with all the cozy flavors of fall. It comes together quickly and easily with just a handful of ingredients. Once you make a batch, you’ll want to put it on everything!
Sweet potatoes are one of my favorite fall ingredients. As you know, every fall I love highlighting ingredients that fall outside of the usual “pumpkin spice agenda” and showing you that there are SO many other fall flavors that deserve their shine too.

I know you’ve heard of pumpkin butter. And I know you’ve heard of apple butter… but what about sweet potato butter?
After seeing just how popular apple butter and pumpkin butter are, I knew I had to give sweet potatoes the same love. And voilà—my Sweet Potato Butter was born!
What is Sweet Potato Butter?
Sweet Potato Butter is the ultimate fall spread! Made with roasted sweet potato purée, warm spices and just the right amount of sweetness. It’s cooked low and slow until it’s thick, smooth and creamy. It’s so good, super easy to make and packed with cozy fall flavor. Spread it over warm buttermilk biscuits or toast for a cozy fall breakfast. Add it to your latte or cold foam for a seasonal coffee twist. I can’t wait to show you how else I use this craveable spread.

Homemade Spiced Sweet potato Butter
Ingredients
- 1 cup sweet potato puree *see notes*
- 1/2 cup apple juice
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp all spice
- 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice
- 1/2 tsp flaky sea salt
- 1/2 lemon juice
- 1-2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, add the sweet potato puree, maple syrup, apple juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, pumpkin pie spice, and flaky salt. Stir until well combined.
- Over low heat, bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring often to prevent sticking, until the sweet potato mixture thickens and deepens in color. The finished texture should be thick and spreadable, similar to a fruit butter, rather than runny. Remove from the heat and allow to cool.
- Remove from the heat, then stir in the fresh lemon juice and vanilla extract. Allow to cool slightly before transferring to mason jars. Store in the refrigerator until ready to enjoy.
