Ingredients for Sweet Potato Cinnamon Rolls
Here’s what you’ll need:
- All Purpose Flour
- Yeast: I like using Instant Dry Yeast
- Sugar: Both brown and granulated sugar
- Salt
- Sweet Potato Butter
- Egg : room temp
- Milk: whole milk warmed
- Butter: unsalted & melted.
- Vanilla: the more the merrier
- Cinnamon: can’t have cinnamon rolls without it.
For the Frosting:
- Cream Cheese: room temp, for the base of our sweet cream filling.
- Maple Syrup: compliments the sweet potato flavor and helps sweeten the frosting
- Milk: only a splash to bring the frosting together. Heavy cream will also work
- Powdered Sugar: used to sweeten the frosting
- Salt: just a pinch for balance
Instant vs Active yeast
For sweet breads that include dairy like cinnamon rolls, I recommend using Instant yeast. It speeds up the rise, letting you enjoy your cinnamon rolls sooner. Plus, you can skip the proofing step and mix all the dry ingredients together at once.
If you use active dry yeast, the rise time will be twice as long. About 3 hours.
Tips to making the BEST Sweet Potato Cinnamon Rolls
- don’t over bake.
- use room temperature/warm ingredients. Be sure to follow the temperature instructions such as room temperature eggs. Because we’re working with melted butter and warm milk you want to make sure things blend well. Using cold ingredients can affect how they blend into the dough.
- Enjoy warm! Highly recommend enjoying these delicious sweet potato cinnamon rolls warm.

Sweet Potato Cinnamon Rolls
Equipment
- Stand mixer
- Counter top prep paper
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm milk
- 8 tbsp unsalted butter melted
- 1 egg room temp
- 4 cups All Purpose Flour
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 pack Instant dry yeast
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/4 cup heavy cream warm
for the filling
- 1/2 cup sweet potato butter
- 3 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 cup softened butter optional
for the frosting
- 4 oz cream cheese
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp milk
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of all purpose flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and cinnamon.
- In a microwave safe bowl or measuring cup, warm milk and melted butter together in 20 sec increments until the butter is melted and the milk is warm (about 105–110°F) If you don't have a thermometer, it should feel comfortably warm to the touch, not hot
- Add the warm milk, melted butter, and egg to the dry ingredients. Attach the dough hook and knead on low speed until combined, about 3 minutes. The dough will be sticky at this point
- Scrape down the sides of the bowl, then gradually add the remaining 1 cup of flour, 1/4 cup at a time, for a total of 4 cups of flour. Continue kneading on low speed, then increase to medium speed and knead for 5–7 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and no longer sticks to the sides of the bowl.
- Transfer the dough to a well oiled bowl and cover with saran wrap and a towel. Keep in a warm place to rise until it doubles in size. About 1 – 1 1/2 hr.
- While the dough rises, prep the filling. Combine brown sugar, cinnamon and sweet potato butter. Mix until smooth.
- Once the dough has risen, punch down the dough and roll out into a rectangle. Spread the sweet potato filling over the dough. Tightly roll the dough, pinching the edges together to seal, and place the roll seam-side down.
- Trim the ends of the cinnamon roll to ensure even pieces, as the ends often have less filling. Cut the dough into 1 to 1 1/2 inch pieces using unflavored floss or a serrated knife. This recipe 10-12 cinnamon rolls, depending on your preferred thickness.
- Place the cinnamon rolls into a 9×13 baking dish or a 9×9 baking dish lined with parchment paper. Cover and allow the cinnamon rolls to rise for an additional 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Once they rise, pour over warm heavy cream. Bake on 350°F for 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.
For the icing
- Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, beat the softened cream cheese and room-temperature butter together until smooth and creamy. Add in powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract, maple syrup, and a pinch of salt, then mix until everything is well combined and the frosting is smooth and fluffy.
- Spread the icing over the slightly cooled cinnamon rolls. Serve immediately and enjoy.
